ABOUT STEM-X

We believe STEM-X is an opportunity for students to foster confidence, competence, and a sense of belonging in STEM fields. While they can feel intimidating or exclusive, we know STEM fields are expansive, and can be for everyone when intentionally made accessible. We want each of our students to feel confident that they can be valuable contributors to whatever discipline they pursue.

Since its inception, STEM-X (formerly “STEM Institutes”) has provided high quality summer programming to thousands of inspired learners. Over the years, STEM-X evolved to include the Arts, Theatre, and Music, hence the “X” in “STEM-X”.  It is a new way to engage our talented learners holistically by exploring a broad scope of their aptitudes, interests, and abilities. In our workshops and beyond, it is the intersection of “STEM” and “X” that reveals dimensions in humanity, enriches the quality of life, and fuels the creativity required to make real world advances in STEM.

Let's Go to Korea! - Let’s go to Korea by learning about the culture, play fun Korean games, and learn how to make Korean sushi called BiBimBop!

Origami Science - Students will learn how a piece of paper can transform into different shapes, creatures and objects and explore various scientific and mathematical questions such as how many times can a piece of paper be folded or how can a paper airplane fly the farthest. They will also learn some Japanese culture, language and art elements in this class.

Photography Extravaganza! - Have you ever wanted to know what all those buttons on the fancy DSLR camera are for? Do you want to learn how to take a photograph without a camera? If you answered yes to any of these questions, The Photography Extravaganza class is for you! In this class you will learn how to use a DSLR camera. We will be doing photo labs that include splash photography, light painting, and portrait photography. Students will also alter photographs to add a hands-on experience to their digital photos. Cameras will be provided by the instructor.

Retro Game Design using Scratch - Retro Game Design course is a fun and interactive way for kids to learn about game design using Scratch programming language. Scratch is a free and user-friendly visual programming language that enables kids to create their own interactive stories, animations, and games. This course is designed for beginners who have little or no prior experience in programming.

The Demos of Science - One of my classes in college had a project called '100 demos in 100 minutes' or something like that. I would make it similar to this. I would show students several demos that I have found on the internet or come up with, teach  the science behind it in ways they can understand. Then, we would have the materials for the students to make the demos themselves. Then, we would do a little presentation where every student would share which demo they chose and present to the class.

Writing Your Own Story with Science Fiction - Science Fiction is a great way to include the STEM skills you love into a story. Learn how robots can talk, how people can live in space, how medicine can save the world, or whatever else comes to mind. Writing a story using Science Fiction is a great way to put your imagination to work. You write the story!
